The
Java- and KNSM-islands have
been developed in a short
space of time from forgotten
and deserted corners of Amsterdam
into sought-after islands
for living, prominent in international
architecture and city development.
The ‘Koninklijke Stoombootmaatschappij’
(KNSM’- The Royal Steamer
Company) ran its regular services
from here to Western Indonesia,
Central-America, the Levant,
and European harbours. Nowadays
you’ll find here hip
shops, living quarters, studios,
and offices.
The architectural cruise first
turns to the Western islands,
such as the former NDSM area
comprising the Silodam of
MVRDV, along Nemo, het ‘Muziekgebouw’(Music
Centre) and the ‘Westerdokseiland’
– another Amsterdam
island. If you wish we can
provide lunch or other catering
on board.
You will disembark on the
Java-island for a walking
tour with guide towards the
KNSM-island passing interesting
gardens and bridges crossing
new canals, houses designed
by internationally renowned
architects such as Coenen,
Kollhof, and Rapp, like the
‘Venetiëplein’
(Venice Square), ‘Barcelonaplein’
(Barcelona Square), and the
‘Pireusplein’
(Piraeus Square). You will
find out everything there
is to know about this fascinating
island. And…we will
visit a cosy Amsterdam café
with a terrace along the quay!
To round the day off we will
have dinner in an interesting
contemporary location.
Tip: this
could be easily combined with
the ‘Amsterdam School’,
‘Het Schip’ museum
(Museum ‘The Ship’)
Stedelijk
museum & architecture
eastern islands
Welcome your guests

and drinks or dinner in an
exciting location!

is for the time being located
on the 2nd and 3rd floors
of the Post Office building
next to the Amsterdam Central
Station. The new building
at the old location will be
finished only in 2010.
Take a guided tour through
the current exhibition or
in combination with the permanent
collection. To be followed
by a visit to the nearby splendid
Public Library building by
Jo Coenen, if you wish accompanied
by a lecture, lunch or coffee
in one of the beautiful rooms
looking out over the ‘IJ’
waterway.
Subsequently, an architectural
cruise towards the Eastern
Harbour areas, IJburg, and
Borneo-island. Among other
things you will pass through
the four small side-canals
with footbridges, and you
will see the building of the
architect Jo Coenen, the 20-story
black apartment tower by the
architect Wiel Arets, housing
built by internationally famous
architects such as Coenen,
Kollhof, and Rapp.
