Exposition Frans Horbach, artist between two worlds
22 january until 29 march 2010
Tweede Boomdwarsstraat 4 , Amsterdam

Frans Horbach paints in the tradition of modern art.
His work may in some way be considered as a homage to great modern artists such as  Mondrian, Malewich, Pollock, Rothko and the Koning. Eventhough his paintings are influenced by these artists, they only refer to them – Horbach brings his own characteristic style.

Frans Horbach emigrated to the USA at an early age and studied architecture at UC Berkeley. During this time he became interested in indigeneous indian cultures. Later he would take long journeys to the indian territories of the American south-west, visiting the Hopi in Arizona, the Huichol in Mexico and, later, also  Inca descendants in the Andean mountains of Peru.
These experiences awakened his interest in art, they inspire him and ultimately would prove to be a lasting influence on his artistic development. Horbach's basic philosophy on art and his view on our own culture have been shaped during these early adventures and discoveries. He refers to the curious role and identity of the Huichol shaman - he is healer, mediator between worlds, and at the same time he is the artist - both embodied in one person.

"Here I found a culture where art still relates to the common reservoir of knowledge about their shared physical and metaphysical universe, and where art is used as a means of coding and channeling that knowledge. Here the role of the shaman as artist, as image maker, was that of mediator between the visible world of things and the invisible realm of spirit and idea." (www.franshorbach.nl)

Before returning to Holland, Frans Horbach lived in Peru, India and Spain, during which time he developed his art and made contributions to the continuity and development of contemporary culture. He is founder / director of Amsterdam Art Net, an online information network for artists and the art-minded public in Amsterdam. (www.amsterdamart.net) We could perhaps refer to Frans Horbach as a shaman of modern art.
