The Amstelhof building, one of the finest examples of monumental classicist architecture in Amsterdam, was an old peoples home during 325 year. After a profound renovation Hermitage Amsterdam opened its doors June 2009. Hermitage Amsterdam is the only dedicated, independently managed venue in the West of St Petersburg’s magnificent State Hermitage Museum.
Matisse to Malevich. Pioneers of Modern Art from the Hermitage
6 March – 17 September 2010
The Hermitage in St. Petersburg houses one of the world’s finest collections of French paintings from the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. This extraordinary section of the museum’s collection comprises hundreds of masterpieces by artists who are considered pioneers of Modernism, including Matisse, Van Dongen, De Vlaminck, Derain and Picasso. This exhibition places the concept of Modernism in a historical perspective, and focuses on the role these artists played in this revolutionary innovation in art. Most of the works in the Hermitage collection were originally owned by the famous Russian collectors Morozov and Sjtsjoekin.
This is the first time that these highlights from this ‘modern’ collection of French art from the Hermitage will be on display in Holland. This exhibition is like no other ever presented in Dutch museums.
The tours includes the exhibition and also architecture, interior and gardens.
