ARTTRA cultural agency is specialized in offering
tailor made programs in The Netherlands and abroad. It
is also possible to book only a tour or lecture at the
museum of your choice. Art historians who can customize
the contents on varying levels coordinate these tours.
In English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese,
Japanese, Russian or Chinese. To be combined with special
city tours on feet or boat – escorted by the same
guide!
The museum is located
since 1987 in four former
synagogues, the oldest
dating back to 17th
century, and houses
a rich collection. It
shows the history, religion
and culture of Jews
in the Netherlands and
its former colonies.
The museum's collection
includes 11,000 art
objects, ceremonial
objects and historical
objects, but only some
five percent of which
is on display at any
one time. It has permanent
exhibitions as well
as regularly changing
temporary exhibitions.
The exhibition on the
ground floor focuses
on Jewish traditions
and customs. The presentation
is inspired by the former
interior of the synagogue.
Ceremonial objects from
the museum collection
are shown in locations
where they used to be
placed in the synagogue.
This gives visitors
a sense of the surroundings
in which they find themselves
and enables them to
taste the original synagogue
atmosphere.
The tour includes the
permanent collection
and temporary exhibition.
